What do we do with the Help a Child Disaster Relief Fund?
With the Help a Child Disaster Relief Fund, we help children and their families in countries where there is a crisis situation. Our aid workers, working with local partners, provide protection, food, trauma aid, and education.
Where do we work with the Disaster Relief Fund?
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, we are active in the province of North Kivu. Here, one million children are in urgent need of food, trauma care, education and protection. We work mainly from refugee camps in rural areas. In South Sudan, we work in the Pibor region, one of the country’s poorest regions.
Why DR Congo, North Kivu region?
A record number of 6.9 million have been displaced by conflicts in Congo. Never before have so many refugees been counted in a conflict, making it one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world. (sources: International Organization for Migration and nos.nl)
We have been able to carry out effective projects in DR Congo with money from the Disaster Relief Fund:
Children receive backpack with school supplies
New classrooms for children in DR Congo
Why South Sudan, Pibor region? Pibor is one of the poorest regions in South Sudan. Due to the many conflicts and natural disasters, most schools have been destroyed and there are major safety and health risks, especially for young children. Think of food and medicine shortages and lack of access to sanitation and clean water.

Why Disaster Relief?
At Help a Child, we have focused on child sponsorship and long-term projects. Unfortunately, this is not a system that works in unstable crisis areas. What is needed here is to provide food, protection, trauma care, and education in a peaceful environment. In short, we are providing stability in an unstable and unsafe environment. The places where we work become safe havens for children, their families and friends.
When you support the Help a Child emergency fund, our aid workers can get to work directly in an area with a crisis situation, together with local partners. With your donation you invest in immediate relief through education, food, and trauma care.
